    If you want your drift wood to sink faster and not leech (as much) tannins, boil it in water replace the water until its as clear as you like, or if you want it brown use the first batch of water. Let it sit after your done boiling depending on the size/density it can be sinkable in an hour or so. If it dries out it your back to square one with floating.

      This comment should be pinned so that everyone can see it. Anything made out of wood that insists on floating can be waterlogged easily using this method. I've done this for coconut caves and manzanita branches. There is no need to put yourself through the hassle of weighing something down with rocks for 3 months. Boil it in water for awhile first, and glue aquarium plants to it after it cools down. This is the best way to get driftwood to sink almost immediately.

    🎉 Thank you so much for creating this content I have been using plastic tank plants since I started in the hobby over 30 years ago and I want to transition into live plants because I got a rimless 60 gallon cube my dream tank and now I'm doing research 🎉

    Hey Chris! (Or anyone who sees this and can help 😅)
    Im extremely new to live plants and the java fern i was sold came in a blocky kind of substrate. Whats the best method to remove that to get to the roots?

    THANK YOU! Finally a video that doesn’t beat around the bush. You mention that the java ferns don’t like to grow directly on the substrate. I adopted a 6 inch common goldfish who is blind, so my entire aquarium is made up of soft objects, java ferns, and some soft silicone plants. I’ve tried sharper objects, but he always ends up getting hurt. My java ferns are currently growing directly on the substrate. What do you recommend I use (that isn’t driftwood) that the plants will like?
    Thanks again! 🙏

      I have a tank with round river stones with Java ferns glued to them, just create a little pile with the river stones and attach the ferns to the crevices, river stone are round so no sharp edges for the goldfish to get hurt on

    To sink the driftwood, I put a pile of wet cement on some 4 mil poly sheeting, add the wood on top, making sure the wood has a good shape that will embed into the cement (you might need to drill some holes in it), add some pebbles to any visible bare cement and let it dry for a couple of days.

    I don't personally buy my drift wood because I'm lucky to have a creek that runs my backyard and the county owns it so I can trek up the creek as far as I want and find presunken drift wood with natural breaks and splits and not be told otherwise it's actually awesome because I also got my substrate from the creek bed too

      Oh man that does sound awesome. Most natural bodies of water near me are saltwater lol, and idk I’ve considered taking sand from the beach a few times but decided not to risk having to rake salty sand out of my tank if it kills my plants or smt 😅 but man that’s so cool, I swear I’ve had to have spent at least few hundred on just aqua soil, gravel, sand and wood alone in all my tanks!!! Jealous hahaha!

    I super glued narrow leaf java fern to a rock and it looks alot like a sword plant which is cool since I have two bristle nose plecos that I think would destroy sword plant since the leaves are thinner.

    • @calummckinlay3643

      Kind of you have like split seconds before it seizes, be prepared for a white mark that kinda looks like mold were excess glue dries most plants will grow over it or can be covered easily, if you do this out of the tank you can cover it with some sand or something

    I would like to know why aquarium plants are so Krazy expensive...tiny little smashed up pieces that take forever to look good, if they ever do.the only way to get something half descent, is to go to a shop and get plants that have been there long enough to transition to submersed.

    • @myaakarr
      @myaakarr Год назад +3

      Exactly. Most of them are invasive and native to EVERYWHERE so i dont really get why theyre really expensive

    • @DJKuroh
      @DJKuroh Год назад +3

      @myaakarr it's the market. They put a premium on anything labeled "aquarium", and people happily paid that price. Now it's the standard, sadly.
      You could plant a whole garden with the price you'll pay for a planted tank.

    • @hehasaweapon3426
      @hehasaweapon3426 7 месяцев назад

      Stores have to up price to make money most places do 150%+ at minimum so I wouldn't be surprised if the shop is only buying them for a few bucks

    Java Fern is not an aquatic plant. All ferns are terrestrial aquarium plants.
    Java Fern is farmed on land in commercial nurseries.
    Commercial nurseries can only grow java fern on land instead underwater.
    In the wild Java Fern can survive underwater for a short period when periodically flooded during the rainy season.
    For most of the year they grow on the water’s edge, either with their roots in water or moist soil.
    Forcing Java Fern plants to live underwater all the time their leaves will be infested with algae.
    In an aquarium setting Java Fern gets stunted with algae.
    Terrestrial Java Fern has no long term success living underwater all the time because is not an aquatic plant.
